Announcements

We are seeking applicants for our 2009 NIDA Summer Research Internship.

Designed for high school and undergraduate students, this program will provide an intellectually stimulating environment for investigating drug use behavior as it relates to socioeconomic and attitudinal factors as well as how drug use behavioral patterns may be influenced by critical events that occur over the life course.

Opportunities for educational enrichment and mentorship will be provided.  Students will be able to participate in or observe on-going projects.  Students will be introduced to basic concepts of data collection and analysis for the behavioral sciences, assist with manuscript preparation and library research, be exposed to the drug abuse research literature, and provide general research support.  The program will also be a forum for youth to connect with leading experts from multiple disciplines to explore educational and career opportunities in the behavioral sciences.  Students should be available to participate in the program for 10 weeks starting any time between early June and early July 2009.  More information about the UCLA CALDAR program is available here

A complete application is due to NIDA on March 17, 2009.  For eligibility criteria, information on financial support, and an application form, please visit http://www.drugabuse.gov/pdf/sposummer.pdf.  To be placed at UCLA CALDAR, be sure to specify “Site 32” on the application form.

CALDAR, established in the Fall of 2005 through funding by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), is a Center on longitudinal drug abuse research.  The overarching theme of this multidisciplinary research unit is the development and application of rigorous scientific approaches for advancing longitudinal research on drug abuse and its interplay with HIV infection, drug treatment and other service systems.

The aims of CALDAR are to:

  • increase knowledge of longitudinal patterns of drug addiction and their interplay with HIV infection, drug treatment, and other service systems (e.g., mental health, criminal justice, welfare, medical care);
  • enhance the quality and efficiency of research conducted by Center-supported projects by providing centralized support to serve common project functions;
  • provide opportunities for scientific collaboration and cross-project analyses, stimulating conceptual development and integration, and advancing improved research methodologies and statistical approaches; and
  • enhance the relevance and application of longitudinal research on drug use by facilitating dissemination of integrated project findings to a variety of communities.
