One-Day Conference
Life Course of Drug Use and Disease Management
in Longitudinal Research
This one-day conference will address the life course of drug use
and disease management in longitudinal research on drug and alcohol
abuse, HIV, and other behavioral health services.

Research and Clinical Workshops
Track 1: Longitudinal Statistical and Research Methods for
Investigators: Latent Growth Curves for Continuous, Dichotomous,
and Count Data Using Mplus
In Dr. Acock’s session, attendees will be given a very brief
overview of the Mplus program as it relates to growth curve modeling.
Then, the focus shifts to the basic idea of a growth curve including
when they are appropriate, what data is necessary/desirable, and
an overview of the topics we will cover. The first application
of a growth curve will be estimating a linear growth curve that
includes covariates (both time varying and time invariant covariates
will be considered) as well as fitting a quadratic growth curve.
Next, we will show how to estimate growth curves when the outcome
variable is dichotomous. Finally, we will show how to do this when
the outcome is a count variable. Interpretations of the results
for dichotomous and count variables are quite different than for
continuous variables and these differences will be covered in detail. Attention
will be give to interpreting substantive examples and graphic presentations
of the results. The Mplus programs for all examples will be provided
and discussed. Prior background in structural equation modeling
and some experience with the Mplus program will be helpful but
is not essential.

Track 2: Applications of the Chronic Care Approach for Substance
Abuse Treatment Providers
In the morning, this workshop will address the reconceptualizing
and restructuring of the substance abuse treatment delivery system
around concepts such as continuity of care, disease-management
and chronic care models, which are currently topics of discussion
in the field. In the afternoon, performance monitoring and
effective follow-up strategies for tracking and monitoring clients
will be covered.

Workshop on Longitudinal Statistical and
Research Methods for Investigators: Mixed Models for Longitudinal
Dichotomous Data / Mixed Models for Missing Longitudinal Data
In Dr. Hedeker’s session, attendees will first learn about
the use of mixed models for analysis of longitudinal, or repeated
measures, dichotomous outcome data. Since dichotomous outcomes are
common in many areas of research, mixed models for longitudinal dichotomous
data are important. In particular, mixed logistic regression models
will be presented and described. Attention will be paid to the "subject-specific" interpretation
of the parameters in these models, as well as techniques for deriving "population
averaged" estimates. Then focus will then turn to missing data
models for longitudinal studies. Mixed models allow incomplete data
across time and assume that these missing observations are "missing
at random" (MAR) under maximum likelihood estimation. Approaches
that can go further, and don't necessarily assume MAR, are through
the use of pattern mixture and selection models. Applications will
be described of mixed pattern mixture and selection models, including
illustrations of how to estimate such models. Throughout, focus will
be on application of these models, with direct application illustrated
using standard statistical software (i.e., SAS).
Faculty: Donald Hedeker
Participants can register for the one-day conference on August
13, either workshop on August 14, the workshop on August 15, or

Intended Audience
The target audience is advanced students, junior investigators,
experienced researchers, and substance abuse treatment providers
who are interested in expanding their knowledge base and/or skills
in conducting longitudinal research. Participants in the
conference should have a general interest in longitudinal research;
participants in the research workshops should have working knowledge
of regression analysis; participants in the clinical workshop should
be familiar with chronic disease concepts.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the Summer Institute, participants should
be able to:
- Describe life course of drug use and disease management concepts
in longitudinal research on drug abuse and related health services
- Be familiar with chronic care models in substance abuse treatment
provider settings
- Identify issues in the design of longitudinal research studies
- Analyze longitudinal data with a variety of statistical methods
- Interpret results of longitudinal data analyses
Institute Highlights
- Presentations by renowned investigators in the areas of longitudinal
analysis, drug abuse, developmental life course of drug use,
and disease management models
- Practical, experience-based instruction on the design of longitudinal
research and chronic care models
Poster Session
Scientific posters related to longitudinal research and drug abuse
will be on display during the one-day conference on August 13.
The deadline for submission of poster abstracts is May
30,
with notification of poster status around June 16. Please email
your poster abstract to Liz Evans at laevans@ucla.edu.
Travel Awards
A limited number of travel awards are available to (a) junior
investigators and (b) substance abuse treatment provider staff.
All junior investigator applicants must submit an application,
including an abstract for a poster presentation.
All substance abuse treatment provider staff applicants must submit
an application.
Applications should be emailed to Liz Evans (laevans@ucla.edu)
by May 30. Travel award applicants
will be notified of their award status by June 16.
Continuing Education Credits
Up to seventeen hours of continuing education (CE) credit are
available for several disciplines. There is no additional fee for
CE credits. UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs (ISAP) is
approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing
education for psychologists. UCLA ISAP maintains responsibility
for this program and its content. CE credit will also be
provided for CADCs (CAADAC, 2N-00-445-1109), MFTs/LCSWs (BBS, PCE
2001), CATCs (CAADE, CP 20 809 C 0710), CASs (BCAS/CAARR, 5033),
and RNs (through the UCLA School of Nursing, 9542).
