   Summer Institute
   on Longitudinal Research
   August 13-15, 2008

The Center for Advancing Longitudinal Drug Abuse Research (CALDAR; Yih-Ing Hser, Ph.D., PI and Center Director), funded by NIDA (P30 DA016383), hosted its second Summer Institute at Covel Commons on the UCLA campus.  The target audience was advanced students, junior investigators, experienced researchers, and substance abuse treatment providers interested in expanding their knowledge base and/or skills in conducting longitudinal research. The Institute featured: plenary sessions with renowned investigators in the areas of longitudinal analysis, and drug and alcohol abuse, and health services research; longitudinal statistical and research methods workshops; a clinical workshop on applications of the chronic care approach for substance abuse treatment providers; and a poster session.

Speakers included:  Alan Acock, Kevin Conway, Michael Dennis, Sherry Deren, Elizabeth Evans, Margaret Ensminger, Elizabeth Hall, Donald Hedeker, Thomas Hilton, Richard Rawson, and George Vaillant

August 13 - Conference

The theme for the conference was "Life Course of Drug Use and Disease Management in Longitudinal Research," and addressed the life course of drug use and disease management in longitudinal research on drug and alcohol abuse, HIV, and other behavioral health services.

August 14 – Research and Clinical Workshops

Track 1:
Longitudinal Statistical and Methods Workshop for Investigators

Intensive instruction was provided on methods for analyzing longitudinal data, including latent growth models and growth mixture models, with analysis examples using Mplus.

Presentation/handouts and Selected references

Track 2:
Applications of the Chronic Care Approach for Substance Abuse Treatment Providers

The clinical workshop addressed the reconceptualizing and restructuring of the substance abuse treatment delivery system around concepts such as continuity of care, disease management and chronic care models, which are currently topics of discussion in the field. Performance monitoring and effective follow-up strategies for tracking and monitoring clients were also covered.
